A March Madness-style bracket competition is being held to find Michigan’s worst pothole. Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association VP of Government Affairs Lance Binoniemi tells WSJM News the Fix MI State campaign is seeking submissions for the contest.

“As the weather starts to get a little bit nicer and we see some more thawing going on with our roads, we will see more potholes, and we wanted to play a little off with the March Madness and the college basketball tournament,” Binoniemi said. “So we decided to launch this for educational purposes to point out the potholes in our state.”

While holding a pothole contest is a bit fun, Binoniemi says the goal is to point to something more serious.

“Things like the costs that Michiganders endure because of bad roads and the unnecessary repairs that result in blowing a tire or a bent rim or a tie rod as you drive on the poor roads in the state.”

Submissions will be taken at FixMIState.org March 9 through March 16. After that, MITA will put the competing potholes into brackets which the public can vote on. The person who sent in the worst pothole will win a $1,000 gift card to buy new tires. Binoniemi says his group continues to advocate for higher user fees to pay for road repairs.
