State Representative Beth Griffin of Mattawan is promoting cardiovascular health among women. This week, she introduced a resolution declaring February 19 as “Go Red for Women Day.” Griffin said on the Michigan House floor her sister died at 41 from an aortic dissection, a condition that causes an aorta to burst.

“After a long respiratory infection, my sister started having chest pains and radiating pain down one arm,” Griffin said. “She did go to the ER. EKGs were done showing no evidence of a heart attack. She was treated for heartburn and sent home.”

Griffin said her sister died before her condition could be properly diagnosed. That’s why she urges women to watch for the warning signs of heart trouble, seek treatment, and to be insistent. The House approved her resolution. The Go Red for Women movement was created by the American Heart Association.
