Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is calling on employers to give workers a paid holiday on Election Day starting this fall. Wayne State University has recently declared November 3 a university holiday, and Benson is encouraging private companies to follow that example.

“Wayne State announced last week that Election Day will be a holiday for their community, students and staff alike, and that’s the direction we should be moving in,” says Benson.

She says it could enable people to work as poll workers along with increasing voter turnout. There is a bill pending in the state House to make regular election days in May, August and November state holidays, but it’s not gotten any traction yet.
