NCAAFB – Luke Fickell tells Michigan State he’s staying at Cincinnati
Coach Luke Fickell has informed Michigan State that he has decided to stay with Cincinnati. That leaves the Spartans to resume their search to replace coach Mark Dantonio. The Spartans were interested in Fickell, who has rebuilt Cincinnati’s football team into a Top 25 program in his three seasons. Dantonio stepped down at Michigan State this month and previously coached at Cincinnati. After considering the Michigan State job over the weekend, Fickell announced he was staying because his family is comfortable in Cincinnati.

Hornets 87, Pistons 76 – Hornets beat Pistons 87-76, end 5-game losing streak
Miles Bridges scored 18 points and the Charlotte Hornets ended a five-game losing streak with an 87-76 victory over the Detroit Pistons. The win was Charlotte’s 10th straight against Detroit, including two consecutive 4-0 season sweeps. The Hornets are 13-36 against the rest of the league and had lost 13 of their previous 14 games. Malik Monk added 16 points for the Hornets while Devonte’ Graham had 14 points and 11 assists. The Pistons have lost three straight and nine of 11. Thon Maker led Detroit with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Bruce Brown added 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Nets 106, Pacers 105 – Dinwiddie’s basket gives Nets win, Pacers 6th straight loss
Spencer Dinwiddie made a 21-foot jumper with 5 seconds left to give the Brooklyn Nets a 106-105 victory over the Indiana Pacers. Dinwiddie finished with 21 points. The lead changed hands three times in the final 27 seconds. But Malcolm Brogdon’s 3-pointer at the buzzer came up short and the Pacers lost their sixth in a row. Brooklyn has won two straight at Indianapolis for the first time since 2012-13. Domantas Sabonis led the Pacers with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. It was his fourth triple-double this season.

MLB – MLB considering expanding playoffs to 14 teams
Major League Baseball is considering expanding the playoffs to nearly half the teams and allowing higher-seeded wild-card teams to choose opponents. The playoffs would grow from 10 teams to 14 under the plan. There would be four wild cards in each league, up from two. Any proposal would have to be negotiated with the players’ association. The division winner with the second-best record would choose its opponent from among the three lowest-seeded wild-card teams. The selections would be made on a televised show.

Baylor remains atop The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll in a largely static week among in the top 10. The Bears received 48 of 64 first-place votes from a media panel to stay at No. 1 for the fourth straight week. No. 2 Gonzaga had 15 first-place votes and No. 3 Kansas one. San Diego State and Louisville round out the top five and are followed by Dayton, Duke, Florida State, Maryland and Seton Hall. The Pirates are the lone newcomer in the top-10 after holding the No. 12 spot last week. Preseason No. 1 Michigan State dropped out of the rankings from No. 16 following a three-game losing streak.
