Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott is up for the award of 2019 National Sheriff of the Year. That honor will be handed out by the National Sheriff’s Association at its winter conference in Tampa, Florida this weekend. Abbott says in order to be considered, nominees needed to demonstrate accomplishments both in office and with community involvement. He says adding an additional K9 team is one of those, along with bringing in Forgotten Man Ministries into the jail to give inmates skills to succeed once they’re released. Abbott says that program has been “very successful.”

Other accomplishments include achieving a “no kill” status with the Animal Control Unit in two of the past three years. Abbott says his office has been raising money annually to help provide for needy families at Christmas without ever using tax dollars for that project. He closes his statement by saying “just being nominated is an unbelievable and humble feeling.”
