Michigan State Fire Marshal Kevin Sehlmeyer is reminding everyone to be safe with their Christmas trees this holiday week. He told WSJM News there are fires caused by dry Christmas trees each year. Make sure your tree is watered.

“You want to make sure that you keep that tree from drying out,” Sehlmeyer said. “You also want to keep the tree at least three feet away from a heating source. I know that people always think of a fireplace or a wood stove as a heating source, but you want to make sure space heaters, things like that, you want to keep the tree away from that.”

Sehlmeyer said the worst thing you could do with your tree is decorate it with candles. Also be sure to check out the wires on any lights you put on the tree. One spark could cause a dry Christmas tree to erupt in flames in just a few seconds.

The below video demonstrates how quickly a Christmas tree can go up in flames.
