Police say the shooting at the Blossom Acres housing project in Benton Township and a deadly rollover crash yesterday morning in the city of St. Joseph are connected, but the man who died in the crash was not the shooting victim. St. Joseph Public Safety identifies him as 23-year-old Jhuone Fonder of Benton Harbor, and the autopsy at Western Michigan University determined he died from injuries sustained in the crash when he was one of two people thrown from the car.

The shooting victim is 24-year-old Lakwanta Griffin of Benton Harbor, who remains hospitalized at Spectrum Health Lakeland. Griffin was shot in the hip and the right arm. Along with Fonder, 27-year-old Larry Carter of Benton Harbor, who was driving, was ejected in the crash. The fourth man who was hurt in the crash has been identified as 23-year-old Shamar McClure of Benton Township. Benton Township police are still investigating the shooting, and have not released any information.
