The South Haven City Council has added its voice to the growing list of those seeking disaster relief funds due to coastal erosion. City Manager Brian Dissette tells WSJM News the council this week took action.

“We made a formal outreach to Van Buren County asking if the county would consider some type of state of emergency declaration with the hope that the state of Michigan would then approve that,” Dissette said. “If the state of Michigan approves it, then funds would become available to offset some of those both public and private expenses.”

The city’s action comes not long after the Berrien County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution asking the state for a disaster declaration. High winds and high water levels have caused severe erosion along the lakeshore all around the state.
