A donation of $120,000 has been announced for the Boys and Girls Club of Benton Harbor by Indiana Michigan Power’s Cook nuclear plant. Boys and Girls Club Director of Operations Liji Hanny tells WSJM News the money is for the club’s Academic Success program.

“It’s going to directly help us get a full-time Academic Success coach here at the club’s Fettig Youth Campus for the next three years,” Hanny said.

Hanny says the Academic Success program has helped to improve the projected high school graduation rate among Boys and Girls Club participants. This new coach will be able to help all the more.

“This position will help to create and track individual academic achievement plans for kids in K through 8, and it’s going to give us the ability to communicate on a regular basis with each individual school that our kids go to to make sure that we’re in tune with their curriculum.”

Hanny says the individualized approach to helping kids perform better in school can make a big difference. The Boys and Girls Club is now looking for the right person to fill the role of coach. Hanny praised I&M for demonstrating the company’s desire to help young people and improve the community.
