49ers 31, Browns 3 – 49ers stay perfect, dominate Mayfield, Browns in 31-3 win
Matt Breida ran 83 yards for a touchdown on San Francisco’s first play from scrimmage, Baker Mayfield was harassed into his worst game as a pro, and the 49ers stayed unbeaten for their best start in nearly 30 years, beating the Cleveland Browns 31-3 Monday night. Tevin Coleman added a 19-yard score as part of a dominant ground game on a day when quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 181 yards and kicker Robbie Gould missed a pair of field goal attempts and had a third try blocked. San Francisco, now 4-0, joined the 5-0 New England Patriots as the only remaining undefeated teams in the NFL. It’s the first time the 49ers have won their first four games since 1990. The Browns, with 2 wins and 3 losses, are headed the opposite direction after losing two of three, with fresh concerns about their young quarterback.

The Tampa Bay Rays cut their AL Division Series deficit to 2-1 with 10-3 romp over the Houston Astros. Former Astros hurler Charlie Morton allowed one run and three hits while striking out nine over five innings. Astros manager AJ Hinch announced after the game that Houston will start Justin Verlander on three days of rest in Game 4 of the best-of-five matchup at Tropicana Field on Tuesday. Tampa Bay will use Diego Castillo as an opener.
Cardinals 5, Braves 4 – Molina wins it in 10th
Yadier Molina pushed the St. Louis Cardinals to a deciding Game 5 of the NL Division Series, hitting a tying single in the eighth inning and a winning sacrifice fly in the 10th to beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 Monday. Molina slung his bat far into the outfield after his winner, and the packed crowd at Busch Stadium roared along with him.
Nationals 6, Dodgers 1 – Nat veterans key
Max Scherzer’s season-saving, seven-inning pitching performance and Ryan Zimmerman’s three-run homer lifted the wild-card Washington Nationals to a 6-1 victory over the league-best Los Angeles Dodgers to force a deciding Game 5 in their NL Division Series. They will face off on Wednesday in
Los Angeles.
Yankees 5, Twins 1 – Yankees sweep Twins
The New York Yankees have completed a playoff sweep of the Minnesota Twins and will advance to AL Championship Series. Gleyber Torres got New York going with a second-inning home run and scored on each of his two doubles, giving Luis Severino sufficient support and fueling the Yankees to a 5-1 victory over Minnesota.

NBA – Gores says keeping Drummond a priority for Pistons
Pistons owner Tom Gores says keeping Andre Drummond in the fold is a top priority, and that Detroit needs to take another step forward after making the playoffs a season ago. Gores was on hand Monday at the opening of the team’s new training center and corporate headquarters in midtown Detroit. The new facility completes the team’s move to the city from suburban Auburn Hills. The Pistons are entering their third season playing their games at Little Caesars Arena downtown. The $90 million Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center includes a sports medicine, treatment and rehab facility managed by the Henry Ford Health System, as well as retail and public spaces. Gores was asked afterward about a possible contract extension for Drummond, the team’s standout center. He spoke highly of Drummond but did not elaborate on any possible negotiations.
NBA – Agent: Raptors, Lowry agree on $31 million extension
Kyle Lowry and the Toronto Raptors have agreed on a $31 million, one-year extension that could keep him with the NBA champions through the 2020-21 season. Agent Mark Bartelstein on Monday confirmed the agreement, which was first reported by ESPN. Lowry was entering the final year of a $100 million, three-year deal. But now he’ll bypass free agency next summer, and the short-term deal helps the Raptors keep the flexibility many teams will want going into what’s likely to be a massive free-agent summer of 2021. Lowry is entering his 14th NBA season and his eighth with the Raptors, making him the longest-tenured player on the roster. He’s been an All-Star the last five seasons. He averaged 14.2 points and a career-best 8.7 assists last season while helping Toronto win its first NBA title.
NCAA – Pac-12 Commissioner: Serious concerns with California law
Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott has expressed serious concerns about a new law that would allow college athletes in California to hire agents and be compensated for the use of their name or likeness through endorsement deals. The law signed last week by Gov. Gavin Newsom would blur the lines between college athletics and professional sports, Scott said Monday at Pac-12 women’s basketball media day. Also, other states considering similar legislation would create an unbalanced state-by-state approach to governing amateur sports. "We are for choice and if young people want to earn money from their name, image or likeness or get paid to play, they should have that opportunity. That’s called pro sports," said Scott, who met with the coaches and student-athletes Monday morning. "College sports is different. You go to get an education. It’s amateur, they’re students. Those are the defining characteristics and we’d like to see those lines not get blurred."
NCAAFB – Big Ten defenses shine over the weekend
Big Ten defenses turned in three of the season’s top five sack totals over the weekend, with Penn State leading the way with 10 against Purdue. Wisconsin had nine against Kent State and Michigan had eight against Iowa. Minnesota’s Rodney Smith had the top rushing performance with 211 yards against Illinois. San Diego State’s Luq Barcoo intercepted three straight passes against Colorado State.
NCAAFB – Harbaugh insists offense is hitting its stride
Jim Harbaugh insists Michigan is hitting its stride on offense, apparently seeing what observers outside the program are missing. The Wolverines were held scoreless for the final three quarters of a 10-3 win over Iowa and appeared to affirm doubts they can have success with the ball against quality opponents. No. 16 Michigan may be able to put together an encouraging performance at Illinois as it did against Rutgers, but ranked teams are all over the second half of the regular season schedule.
