Come 2021, there will be a new commemorative coin available to support FIRST Robotics programs around the country. That’s thanks to a bill sponsored in the U.S. House by Congressman Fred Upton. He tells WSJM News the Christa McAuliffe Commemorative Coin Act of 2019 will direct the U.S. Treasury to mint the $1 silver coin.

“We had over 300 cosponsors of my legislation, and both the House and Senate have now passed that bill,” Upton said. “When the president signs it, which he will in the next couple weeks as it’s ready for his signature, we’ll see a new coin for FIRST Robotics.”

After the coin pays for itself, the proceeds will go to local FIRST Robotics programs. Upton says this will mean more resources and opportunities for students to develop STEM skills.
