A drug treatment resource in the St. Joseph area is already making a difference for police in Berrien County. Michigan State Police Trooper Holly Higgs of the Niles post tells WSJM News since Carol’s Hope expanded to 24-7 operations, police have been able to take those seeking help there without needing to arrange long distance trips.

“We will physically bring people to Carol’s Hope if that is where they want to go,” Higgs said. “It’s a different option instead of going to the emergency room if they want help. Even if they don’t have a bed available, they can do the initial, at that time, that day. It’s 24 hours a day so it doesn’t even matter what time they come in.”

Higgs says it is rare for an area like Berrien County to have a drug treatment center like Carol’s Hope around. When someone goes to Carol’s Hope looking for addiction help, they’ll be connected with the resources they need. Higgs says other areas of the state are far from such services, meaning when people go to police for help, transportation to a treatment center can get complicated.
