A clean-up event will be held at Silver Beach in St. Joseph this Saturday. Alliance for the Great Lakes volunteer Blair Tatrault tells WSJM News the event is part of a full day of beach clean-ups taking place throughout the region. He’s looking for volunteers.

“We’re hoping for about 25 to 50 people,” Tatrault said. “I’m not sure how many we have signed up at the moment, but it doesn’t look like a lot so we have a lot of slots available.”

Tatrault says gloves and bags will be provided. The trash that gets picked up will be logged for research purposes by the Chicago-based Alliance for the Great Lakes. Tatrault says it can be depressing to see trash lying around on the beach.

“There’s a lot of waste on that beach, and that is a local gem. It’s a beautiful place, and we just want to clean it up to make sure that not only aesthetically the beach looks the way it should, but that these harmful products don’t make it into the marine ecosystem of the lake.”

The volunteers are invited to meet near the restroom buildings of Silver Beach Saturday at 10 a.m. and the cleanup will go through noon. You can register online at GreatLakes.org or just show up.
