Michigan State Police are looking for new recruits, and to that end, they’re planning a recruitment seminar for October 19 in Lawrence. MSP Trooper Kellie Shaffer tells WSJM News as retirements loom, Michigan State Police will have a lot of positions to fill. She says being a trooper is an attractive prospect some might want to consider.

“For years we had the stigma where you would be placed several miles away from your home location, but that’s no longer the case,” Shaffer said. “You get a wish list. More than likely, you’ll get [[ assigned ]] to one of your top two picks of where you want to go.”

Also, Shaffer says you can get transferred all over Michigan if you wish. To be a state police trooper, you must have no felonies, a good driving record and credit history, and a high school diploma or GED. The starting pay is $48,000 and Shaffer says she’s found the work rewarding.

“I’m 15 years into the position as a trooper, and I’ve had nine and a half years prior law enforcement. This was by far the better move and decision that I could have made personally for my career.”

The recruitment seminar will be Saturday, October 19, at the Van Buren Conference Center from 10 a.m. to noon. It will go over what it takes to be trooper, what a trooper does, and what the training academy is like. You can call the Michigan State Police post in Paw Paw to register.
