Michigan Works is promoting a new season of the Going Pro program in southwest Michigan. Mark O’Reilly with Kinexus in Benton Harbor tells WSJM News Going Pro helps companies get funds to train workers.

“Going Pro is a grant that was initially started to help bridge the skills gap in our workforce,” O’Reilly said. “Employers weren’t able to find the talent that they needed, and so the Going Pro is a grant that’s offered by the state that really helps support the employer needs by proving funds so they can then put their employees through training or they can hire new people.”

O’Reilly says 45 companies in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties last year were awarded funds to hire and train more than 1,900 employees. In all, it came out to $2.1 million. He encourages all businesses looking to hire, train, or expand to consider seeking a Going Pro grant. To do so, he says contact Kinexus. The deadline to apply for grants in this current season is October 2.
