Several state officials, including new state Superintendent Michael Rice, will be in Benton Harbor today for a meeting with the Benton Harbor Area Schools Board of Education. Rice is on record opposing the Whitmer administration’s proposal to suspend operations of Benton Harbor High School until the district’s finances and academics improve, giving board members hope that they’ll be able to avoid a shutdown. The state is also sending representatives from the Treasury and Education departments along with the governor’s office. The meeting to discuss the way forward for the district begins at 5 p.m. at Benton Harbor High School.
