There will be an update later this month on the PFAS contamination in Hartford around the site of the former Du-Wel plant. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy will hold a public forum along with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Van Buren/Cass District Health Department on August 21 at Hartford High School starting at 6 pm. George Friday is the environmental health director for the Van Buren/Cass District Health Department and says 82 residential wells were tested.

“We have positive hits in more than half of the residential wells,” Friday says. The meeting later this month will include more information from state and local officials on those test results.

He tells WSJM News one of the difficulties with PFAS is the chemicals don’t act like other contaminants, and it’s hard to predict where they will spread once they’re into the soil and groundwater. Sampling around the former metal plating facility in may indicated PFAS was in the groundwater near the site.
