A proposed ordinance to ban the manufacture and sale of recreational marijuana in South Haven is on the city council agenda for tonight. It comes from a petition initiative by a group calling itself Concerned Citizens of South Haven, and spokesman Don Bemis says the council has some options.

“Either adopt the proposed ordinance, or to reject adoption and schedule it for a vote in November,” says Bemis. He adds the organization’s main concern is access to marijuana by kids.

“Recognizing that marijuana usage by people under the age of 21 continues to be illegal, and this would not change that. But our concern is, the more marijuana industry there is in town, the more attractive and easier it would be for kids to get in to marijuana,” says Bemis.

The initiative will not affect medical marijuana as allowed by Michigan and local law nor will it impact the law allowing for personal use and possession of recreational marijuana by adults 21 and older. The city council meeting begins at 7 p.m., and we’ll have updates on air Tuesday morning and online tonight.
