Twenty of the Democrats seeking their party’s presidential nomination will be on the Fox Theatre stage in Detroit over two nights this week for the second series of debates, broadcast on CNN. Several of them are already making the rounds in the Motor City, with Washington Governor Jay Inslee taking time Monday to unveil his plan to fight climate change at an appearance in southwest Detroit.

“I’m going to make sure come hell or high water that the Democratic Party discusses the climate change crisis,” Inslee promised. “And we really figure out who’s got the chops to get this job done. I’m confident that if we do that, I’m going to look really good and I’m looking forward to that.”

Also Monday, Senator Kamala Harris of California revealed details of her healthcare reform proposal, promising to wipe out co-pays and save people money.

“There will be no more deductible, and insurance companies, you’re not going to dictate the terms in terms of what doctor an individual can see,” said Harris. Her “Medicare for all” plan allows private insurance coverage to stick around, but would get rid of employer-sponsored healthcare.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg held a rally in Detroit Sunday night and took direct aim at recent Twitter posts by President Trump against four congresswomen of color, including Rashida Tlaib of Detroit. Buttigieg discussed his military service and what it means to fight for the flag of the United States.

“One of the things that flag represents is the idea that you can speak out about injustice, criticize those in charge, including the President, and never be told to go back to where you came from,” said Buttigieg.

Ten candidates will debate Tuesday night, and the other ten will be on stage Wednesday night.
