Consumers Energy is issuing tips to its customers on how to reduce their electric bills now that summer is here and many are turning on their air conditioning. Spokesperson Brian Wheeler tells WSJM News forecasters are predicting this month to be one of the hottest in six years. With that in mind, he says there are very small sacrifices you can make to save.

“We do encourage people to set their thermostats to 78 if they can,” Wheeler said. “That might sound a little bit high, and it really depends on a person’s comfort level and what they want to do in their house, but fort every degree that you cna set your thermostat, higher, that’s going to reduce your bill by 1 to 3 percent.”

Wheeler says you can also turn off your AC when you’re not at home. In addition, he recommends making sure no vents are blocked, and replacing your air conditioner’s filters. Wheeler says Consumers Energy does have a program you can sign up for where they will remotely turn off your AC for short periods at a few points throughout the day. You can find out more right here.
