Tigers 11, White Sox 5 – Tigers use 3 HRs, Boyd’s 13 K’s to top ChiSox 11-5
Niko Goodrum lined a two-run homer in Detroit’s five-run sixth inning, Matthew Boyd struck out 13 to tie a career high and the Tigers topped the Chicago White Sox 11-5 on Thursday. Miguel Cabrera added a 454-foot solo shot and doubled, and Jeimer Candelario also homered. John Hicks and Nicholas Castellanos each had two RBIs as Detroit rebounded after being swept in doubleheader on Wednesday to win for just the second time in its last 13 games. White Sox rookie Eloy Jimenez hit a 436-foot two-run homer to center and had three RBIs. Jose Rondon also had a two-run drive, but the Chicago’s winning streak ended at three games and the White Sox failed to climb back to .500.  Boyd (6-6) yielded four runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings, and all but three of the outs he recorded came via strikeout. He struck out the side in the first and fourth innings, did not walk a batter and won for the first time since May 28. Chicago’s Reynoldo Lopez (4-8) retired the first nine Detroit batters, but allowed nine hits and seven runs (six earned) before Goodrum’s shot to right chased him with one out in the sixth.

Cubs 11, Pirates 3 – Cubs erupt after Maddon’s ejection to rip Pirates 11-3
Kris Bryant hit his 17th homer and the Chicago Cubs erupted following manager Joe Maddon’s fourth-inning ejection, routing the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-3 on Thursday to stop a four-game losing streak.  Bryant tied a season high with four hits, including a first-inning shot to the seats in right-center off Jordan Lyles (5-5). Robel Garcia finished a double short of the cycle in his first major league start. Willson Contreras drove in three runs for the Cubs, who moved back into a tie with Milwaukee for first place in the NL Central, where all five teams are separated by 3 ½ games.  Maddon watched the final 5 1/2 innings from the Chicago clubhouse after getting tossed following an exchange with the Pittsburgh dugout that ended with Maddon being restrained by home plate umpire Joe West.  Maddon appeared to take exception with Lyles pitching up and in to All-Star Javier Báez. He walked onto the field pointing his finger at Pirates manager Clint Hurdle. West and Bryant teamed up to hold Maddon back while Hurdle watched from just outside the Pittsburgh dugout.

Tennis – Coco Gauff headlines play on Centre Court at Wimbledon
Coco Gauff will be the headline act on Centre Court at Wimbledon.  Not bad for a 15-year-old in her first Grand Slam tournament. The American will play the last match of the day at the All England Club’s biggest stadium when she faces Polona Hercog of Slovenia, another unseeded player. Gauff has quickly become a star at the grass-court major championship. She beat five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in the first round and 2017 semifinalist Magdalena Rybarikova in the second. Another exciting teenager, 18-year-old Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, will also try to reach the fourth round when he takes on Ugo Humbert on No. 1 Court. Defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic faces Hubert Hurkacz earlier in that arena.

NFL – Dolphins’ Norton injured in crash
Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Kendrick Norton suffered multiple injuries in a car crash that required his left arm to be amputated. Sports agent Malki Kawa confirmed the injuries in a tweet on Thursday morning. The Florida Highway Patrol says the Ford F250 Norton was driving crashed into a concrete barrier and overturned early Thursday on State Road 836 near Miami. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews rendered aid to 22-year-old Norton, who was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.  Norton played at the University of Miami and was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the seventh round in 2018. He spent much of last season on their practice squad. The Dolphins signed him in December.

Golf – PGA – Piercy leads after birdie binge
Scott Piercy birdied eight of his final 11 holes for a 9-under 62 and the first-round lead at the inaugural 3M Open in Blaine, Minn. Piercy is seeking his fifth career tour win and first since the 2018 Zurich Classic. Adam Hadwin and Hideki Matsuyama (hih-DEH’-kee maht-soo-YAH’-mah) are each two shots back at the TPC Twin Cities, one ahead of Brian Harman, Sungjae Im, Patton Kizzire and Sam Saunders.

Golf – LPGA – Liu leads following 62
China’s Yu Liu broke her personal best on the same course with a 10-under 62 that gave her a one-shot lead among early starters in the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic. Liu shot a career-low 63 a year ago in the second round of the Thornberry Creek tournament. She is just ahead of Yealimi Noh and Jeongeun Lee. Another shot back was a group that included Anna Nordqvist and Shanshan Feng.

Competitive Eating – “Jaws” wins again on Coney Island
Joey “Jaws” Chestnut ate 71 wieners and buns to secure his 12th title at Nathan’s Famous annual July Fourth hot dog eating contest. In front of a crowd of fans and facing 17 opponents, the California native came close but didn’t manage to beat his own record of 74 dogs, set last year.   However, he far exceeded his nearest competitors. Afterward, Chestnut said he was disappointed to not break his record, but planned to try again next year. Miki Sudo (MIHK’-ee SOO’doh) had already won the women’s competition by chomping down 31 hot dogs. She said she felt “wonderful” as she walked off the stage. Spectators with foam hot dog hats, plastic noisemakers and homemade signs
descended on Coney Island’s famed boardwalk for the contest.
