A two-mile project on M-51 south of Niles will get underway on Monday. The Michigan Department of Transportation will be repaving the highway between Chestnut Lane and the Indiana state line. The $3.4 million project is scheduled to be done by September 6. Crews will be installing new sidewalk ramps, curbs and gutters and making joint and crack repairs along with drainage fixes as part of the work. One lane will remain open in each direction, but there will be a traffic shift during the project. MDOT says the work is being done to improve safety and ride quality, and will extend the life of M-51.
