A 78-year-old woman is dead following a Sunday fire in Benton Township. The Benton Township Police Department tells us officers were dispatched to a home in the 1800 block of Wood Street around 3:20 a.m. Upon arrival, they found the home actively engulfed in flames. Two residents had gotten out of the home and told officers there was still a woman trapped inside. The officers made several attempts to get to her, but couldn’t because of the flames and heavy smoke. The Benton Township Fire Department arrived and put the fire out. They found the deceased woman in the home. The two residents who had gotten out were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
