Marlins 5, Tigers 4 – 11 Innings – Marlins blow lead, then recover to beat Tigers 5-4 in 11
Chad Wallach hit a tiebreaking double in the 11th inning, and the Miami Marlins beat Detroit 5-4 on Tuesday night after the Tigers tied it in a wild bottom of the ninth.  Detroit forced extra innings by scoring two unearned runs off Miami closer Sergio Romo. The bottom of the ninth included an error, two replay reversals and the ejection of Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire. That was the only success Detroit had against the Miami bullpen, though. Nick Anderson (1-1) struck out the side in the 10th, then closed the Tigers out in the 11th for his first career win. Wallach put the Marlins ahead in the 11th with a two-out drive to left-center field off Joe Jimenez (2-2). The Tigers have dropped seven in a row, although their game Sunday against Oakland was suspended in the seventh inning.

Astros 5, White Sox 1 – Verlander has season-best 12 Ks in 5-1 win over White Sox
Justin Verlander took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and struck out a season-high 12 to lead the Houston Astros to a 5-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.  Verlander (8-1) was in control from the first pitch, allowing one hit and walking one in eight innings for his fourth straight win and the seventh in eight starts. The only hit off him came when Jose Abreu sent the first pitch of his at-bat just over the wall and out of reach of a leaping Jake Marisnick in straightaway center field with one out in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-1.  Yuli Gurriel hit a solo homer off Dylan Covey (0-3) in the fourth inning to give the Astros home runs in 18 straight games, tying the second-longest streak in franchise history.

Cubs 3, Phillies 2 – Báez’s pinch-hit single lifts Cubs over Phillies 3-2
Pinch-hitter Javier Báez’s single capped a two-run, ninth-inning rally and lifted the Chicago Cubs over Philadelphia 3-2 on Tuesday night to stop the Phillies’ four-game winning streak.  Kris Bryant had three hits for the Cubs and his speed helped him slide home with two runs.  Phillies slugger Bryce Harper went 0 for 4, dropping his average to .224, and failed to reach base at Wrigley Field for the first time in 19 games at the iconic ballpark. Jean Segura doubled in the first to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.  Chicago trailed 2-1 starting the ninth, but Juan Nicasio (0-2) walked Bryant leading off, Anthony Rizzo doubled and, after Willson Contreras hit a shallow flyout, Jason Heyward was intentionally walked. Bryant scored when Albert Almora Jr. hit a chopper toward first, and Nicasio’s underhand toss to catcher J.T. Realmuto was late, a call upheld by a video review. Báez, who didn’t start for the second straight game because of a jammed right heel, lined Nicasio’s first pitch to right over a drawn-in infield. Kyle Ryan (1-1) got 2 outs for the win.

David Perron had a goal and an assist to back rookie Jordan Binnington, who stopped 25 shots in his team-record 12th win. Perron opened the scoring 92 seconds into the game with help from Ryan O’Reilly, who set up three goals.  Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals will be on Monday night in Boston.

Norm Powell came off the bench to hit four 3s and score 18 points for Toronto, while Marc Gasol added 17 points. Serge Ibaka had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Raptors, who took the last two games after dropping the first two in Milwaukee.

NCAAMBB – Michigan’s Brazdeikis staying in draft
Michigan’s Iggy Brazdeikis is staying in the NBA draft.  The basketball program announced his decision Tuesday. The school announced last month that Brazdeikis, Charles Matthews and Jordan Poole were declaring for the draft. All three could have changed their minds and come back, but instead, they’ve all said they would indeed leave school. Brazdeikis led Michigan with 14.8 points a game as a freshman this past season. In a statement tweeted out by the basketball program Tuesday, Brazdeikis said he’s ready for the next level.

NCAABSB – Michigan/St. Joe Alum Jordan Brewer named Big Ten Player of the Year
University of Michigan junior Jordan Brewer was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the year.  Brewer was a 2016 graduate of St. Joseph High School and went on to play his first two seasons at Lincoln Trails Community College in Robinson, Illinois before transferring to the University of Michigan last fall.  Brewer leads the Big Ten in batting average (.358), second in runs batted in (52), he’s also second in hits (69), and second in stolen bases with 19.   Brewer has also hit 12 home runs this season for the conference leading Wolverines.   He’s among nine Michigan players to earn year end awards from the Big Ten.  Brewer played football, basketball and baseball at St. Joe.

NCAABSB – Duke tops Notre Dame 10-6 at ACC Tournament
Michael Rothenberg hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, and Duke beat Notre Dame 10-6 on Tuesday night at the Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament. The seventh-seeded Blue Devils (31-24) won their opener in pool play and will earn a spot in the semifinals with a victory over second-seeded Georgia Tech (38-16) on Friday. Lead-off hitter Joey Loperfido went 1 for 3 with three walks and three runs scored for Duke. Rothenberg’s drive to right-center in the first put the Blue Devils up 4-0. He added a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the seventh. Reliever Matt Dockman (6-1) entered in the fourth and gave up three hits in three innings for the victory. Thomas Girard struck out six in 2 2/3 innings for his ninth save. Eric Gilgenbach hit a solo homer for the 11th-seeded Fighting Irish (24-29).

NFL – Buffalo Bills have player wearing OJ Simpson’s former No. 32
For the first time in 42 years, the Bills have a player wearing O.J. Simpson’s former No. 32. Running back Senorise Perry wore the jersey number at Buffalo’s spring practices this week.  Simpson, whose name remains on the Bills Wall of Fame, served nine years for armed robbery and assault after confronting two sports collectibles dealers at a Las Vegas casino hotel in September 2007.   The Pro Football Hall of Famer was acquitted of two counts of murder in the 1994 slayings of his ex-wife and her friend Ron Goldman, but a civil court jury found him liable for wrongful death and ordered him to pay $33.5 million.

NFL – NFL owners to consider tweaking pass interference reviews
NFL owners meeting Wednesday will consider a proposal to refine the new rule that allows challenges involving pass interference, and may also announce locations to host upcoming drafts. Owners voted in March to allow interference calls or non-calls to be challenged by coaches and reviewed via replay as a one-year experiment. The tweak proposed this week would take the decision to review pass interference in the final two minutes of each half out of the hands of the officials. Reviews in the final two minutes would require a coach’s challenge, too. Under the rule adopted in March, in the final two minutes only officials in the booth can stop the game for reviews involving pass interference, as is the case with other reviewable plays.
