Tigers 5, Royals 4 – Turnbull solid, and Tigers beat Royals 5-4 in home opener
Spencer Turnbull struck out 10 in six innings, and the Detroit Tigers drew four straight walks to start the bottom of the seventh, taking the lead for good in their 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.  Josh Harrison stole two bases and scored three times for the Tigers in their home opener. It was tied at 3 in the seventh when Kansas City reliever Kyle Zimmer (0-1) walked Harrison, Nicholas Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera in succession. Kevin McCarthy then came on and walked Niko Goodrum on four pitches, forcing in a run.  Christin Stewart added a sacrifice fly that inning to make it 5-3. Blaine Hardy (1-0) allowed a solo homer to Alex Gordon in the eighth, his second inning of work. Shane Greene pitched the ninth for his fifth save in five chances.

Braves 9, Cubs 4 – Fried shines as Braves complete 3-game sweep of Cubs, 9-4
Max Fried took a perfect game into the sixth inning, Nick Markakis drive in five runs with five hits and the Atlanta Braves beat Yu Darvish and the Chicago Cubs 9-4 on Thursday night to complete a three-game sweep.  The Cubs have lost five straight and are 1-5 for the first time since 2012, when they lost 101 games.  Fried (1-0) made a strong bid to keep a spot in Atlanta’s rotation after Kevin Gausman and Mike Foltynewicz come off the injured list. Gausman is expected to make his debut on Friday night, and Foltynewicz, the 2018 All-Star, could return in about 10 days.  Making only his 10th career start and his first this season after two scoreless relief appearances, the 25-year-old Fried recorded 17 straight outs to open the game. Mark Zagunis singled up the middle with two outs in the sixth to become Chicago’s first baserunner.  Darvish gave up three runs on five hits and four walks, one intentional, in four-plus innings. He has issued 11 walks in a combined 6 2/3 innings in two starts, including a career-high seven walks in only 2 2/3 innings of his first start at Texas on Saturday.

Penguins 4, Red Wings 1 – Penguins lock up playoff berth with 4-1 win over Red Wings
The NHL’s longest active playoff streak is still alive.  Phil Kessell scored twice, Sidney Crosby added a goal and two assists and Matt Murray stopped 33 shots as the Pittsburgh Penguins clinched a postseason berth for the 13th straight year with a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.  Jake Guenztel added his 39th for Pittsburgh, which welcomed center Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Kris Letang back into the lineup by racing past the Red Wings to extend a playoff run that began in 2007.  Matt Puempel scored his first NHL goal in more than two years for the Red Wings. Jimmy Howard finished with 43 saves, but couldn’t quite duplicate his spectacular performance in a victory over the Penguins on Tuesday as Detroit’s six-game winning streak ended.

NCAA – Emmert: Court ruling reinforces NCAA athletes not employees
NCAA President Mark Emmert (EM’-urt) says a judge’s recent ruling in a federal antitrust lawsuit again reinforced that college athletes should be treated as students not employees. Emmert spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday, making his first public comments since last month’s decision in the so-called Alston case.  The Judge ruled last month the NCAA did violate antitrust laws and cannot prohibit schools from providing more benefits to athletes as long as they are tethered to education. Plaintiffs had sought to have all NCAA rules capping compensation be struck down. The NCAA is still appealing the ruling, in part, Emmert says, because the association does not believe courts should decide what qualifies as a benefit tethered to education.

NASCAR – Waltrip set to retire
Darrell Waltrip says he will retire at the end of the Fox Sports portion of the NASCAR schedule following the June 23 race at Sonoma Raceway in California. The 72-year-old Waltrip began his Fox Sports career with the 2001 Daytona 500. The Hall of Famer won 84 races and three Cup Series races over his career before moving straight into the broadcast booth.
