Legislation to help Michigan schools recover from the large amount of snow days this year is being discussed in the Michigan House. State Representative Beth Griffin of Mattawan tells WSJM News the House Ways and Means Committee currently has the package. She says there are two parts to the discussion.

“The first part, which I do believe has a general consensus and agreement on, is the fact that if the governor declares a state of emergency then any school  days that fall under the state emergency would be eligible to be waived,” Griffin said. “That part of the bill is non-controversial. I believe there’s broad agreement on that.”

Griffin says the more complicated part of the bill is a discussion about what to do for schools that have missed more than 20 days so far this year. One option is allowing them to make up missed time by adding extra hours at the end of the school day. Griffin says lawmakers will hash this out when they return from spring break.
