NDSU 78, NCCU 74 – North Dakota State gets First Four win
Tyson Ward scored 23 points and North Dakota State earned the right to face the Blue Devils on Friday by posting a 78-74 victory against North Carolina Central in a First Four tournament game. Vinnie Shahid had 14 points, including a pair of foul shots with 8 seconds left to seal the game for the Bison. The Eagles squandered an outstanding night by senior center Raasean Davis, who scored 20 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.

ASU 74, St.Johns 65 – Arizona State holds off St. John’
Luguentz Dort overcame a hard foul and a leg injury to score 21 points and lead Arizona State to a 74-65 win over St. John’s. The Sun Devils represented the Pac-12 well after the conference went 0-for-3 in the tournament last season. Arizona State will take on Buffalo on Friday. Shamori Ponds had 25 points for the Red Storm.

DePaul 100, CMU 86 – Strus scores 33 to lift DePaul over Cent. Michigan 100-86
Max Strus had 33 points as DePaul beat Central Michigan 100-86 in the College Basketball Invitational first round on Wednesday night.  Eli Cain had 20 points for DePaul (16-15). Paul Reed added 17 points. Devin Gage had 14 points for the hosts. DePaul is undefeated (3-0) when scoring at least 100 points this season. David DiLeo had 20 points for the Chippewas (23-12). Larry Austin Jr. added 20 points. Shawn Roundtree had 16 points.

Bulls 126, Wizards 120 – OT – Markkanen, Dunn lead Bulls over Wizards 126-120 in OT
Lauri Markkanen had 32 points and 13 rebounds, Kris Dunn scored a season-high 26 — including eight in overtime — to go with 13 assists, and the short-handed Chicago Bulls beat the Wizards 126-120 on Wednesday night.  Markkanen nailed five 3-pointers, including a key shot beyond the arc in overtime. Dunn hit two 3’s in OT, and converted a pair of free throws near the end to make it a six-point game.  The Bulls won their second straight after dropping five in a row, despite leading scorer Zach LaVine and Otto Porter Jr. not playing because of injuries.

NBA/NHL – Bulls, Blackhawks to install high-def scoreboard
The NBA’s Chicago Bulls and NHL’s Blackhawks are giving their home a high-definition upgrade with a new scoreboard and sound system.  The teams announced Wednesday that a new board with the largest high-def display among NBA and NHL arenas will hang above the court and ice at United Center next season. It will have the largest center-hung screen display among arenas that host both NBA and NHL teams at 8,600 square feet.  The LED screen display will be about four times the size of the current one and produce a sharper image. The board will also have several dropdown panels.  The teams also say fans in each seat will have improved sightlines. An upgraded sound system will also be installed at the nearly 25-year-old arena.

NHL – Red Wings sign Howard to 1-year extension
The Detroit Red Wings have signed goalie Jimmy Howard to a $4 million, one-year contract extension.  The deal keeps Howard in the fold for next season. The 34-year-old Howard has played for the Red Wings his whole NHL career. He’s third on the franchise’s career list in wins (240) and fourth in shutouts (24).  Howard played in his 500th career game on Feb. 14 and was named to the NHL All-Star game for the third time in his career this season.  Howard is 19-20-5 this season with a 3.05 goals-against average.  The Red Wings announced his extension Wednesday.

MLB – AP source: White Sox near $43M, 6-year deal with Jimenez
The White Sox are nearing a $43 million, six-year contract with highly regarded outfield prospect Eloy Jimenez, a person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press. Jimenez’s deal would nearly double the previous high for a player with no major league service. Jimenez was a key part of the trade that sent pitcher Jose Quintana to the Cubs during the 2017 season.

NFL – Bears re-sign O’Donnell
The Chicago Bears say they have re-signed veteran punter Pat O’Donnell to a two-year contract. O’Donnell has spent all five of his seasons with Chicago and is the franchise’s leader with a 44.9-yard career gross average. He averaged 45 yards per punt last season and tied a career high with 28 punts inside the 20.

NFL – Raiders sign free agent cornerback Nevin Lawson
The Oakland Raiders have signed unrestricted free agent cornerback Nevin Lawson.  Lawson joined the Raiders on Wednesday after spending the first five seasons of his career in Detroit. Lawson was a fourth-round pick by the Lions in 2014 and has played 63 games with 54 starts in his career. He has 194 tackles, 25 passes defensed, one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Lawson adds depth at cornerback alongside 2017 first-round pick Gareon Conley and Daryl Worley.

AAF – Alliance football league moves title game to Frisco, Texas
The Alliance of American Football is moving its championship game from Las Vegas to Frisco, Texas. The new eight-team spring league, which plays its seventh set of games this weekend, said Wednesday that the April 27 title match will switch to The Ford Center at the Star, which is owned by Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys and is the indoor practice arena for the team.  Originally, the title game was set for Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, an aging college facility. But when Tom Dundon, owner of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, joined the Alliance last month as chairman, he helped arrange for the championship game’s move to Texas during a meeting with Jones at the NFL combine.  Fans who purchased tickets to the game in Las Vegas will receive full refunds.

  • Lake Michigan College had four starters in double figures as the Lady Redhawks beat Chesapeake College 75-69 in the first game in the consolation bracket of the NJCAA National Tournament at North Arkansas College.  Monae Palmer had 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Samantha Jenkins had 14, LaChelle Knox scored 11 points and had 12 rebounds, and Jayla Bibbs had 10 points.  Jahnaya Peterson led Chesapeake with 37 points.   The Redhawks will play again on Friday at noon against the winner of Metropolitan (Mo.) and Wayne County (MI).
