A forum slated for this Thursday at Lake Michigan College will explore the relationship between transgender people and their families. Paula Camp with the OutCenter group the League of Extraordinary Genders tells WSJM News “Helping Families Support their LGBTQ Children” will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the LMC campus in Benton Township.

“It’s about what happens when your child comes up and says, ‘I am transgender, or lesbian, or gay. I’m a little different,’ and how parents could or should react to that,” Camp said.

The guest speaker will be Margo Runkle, a member of the OutCenter board and therapist with experience working with parents and their LGBTQ children.

“She’s going to be talking about some of the dos and don’ts and whether you’re a parent now and wonder how you’d react to this kind of thing, or expect to be a parent or a grandparent,” Camp said. “It’s a great way for people in our community to learn what happens when that scenario takes place.”

This will be the second in a series of forums planned by the OutCenter at LMC that will focus on LGBTQ residents of southwest Michigan. Camp says the first one was so well-attended, they are holding this week’s forum in a different room. It will be in the Brown Lecture Hall, or room D-112. Everyone is welcome.
