A new forum series on the transgender community in southwest Michigan will begin this Thursday at Lake Michigan College. Organized by the OutCenter’s League of Extraordinary Genders, “Southwest Michigan VOICES: Real Stories of Transgender Life” is all about understanding. The league’s Paula Camp spoke with WSJM News.

“We’re putting together a program of monthly events talking about the experience of transgender people in our community and also reaching out tot he community to help them understand the issues that people face here,” Camp said.

Camp says the forums will give the transgender community a chance to speak and be heard.

“We know that there are at least 2,000 transgender folks living here in our community, and to most people, those folks are invisible.”

Thursday’s discussion, “Listening to Transgender Voices from the Heartland,” will feature a St. Mary’s College teacher and student talking about a transgender oral history project. It will be held in room B-309 at Lake Michigan College in Benton Township from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
