Blackhawks 8, Ottawa Senators 7 – DeBrincat has 5 points, Blackhawks hold off Senators 8-7
Alex DeBrincat had the best game of his career, and the Chicago Blackhawks needed all of his production. DeBrincat had three goals and two assists, and the Blackhawks held on to beat the Ottawa Senators 8-7 on Monday night for their ninth win in 11 games. The five points for the 21-year-old set a career high, and his fourth NHL hat trick gave him 32 goals in his second season. DeBrincat continues to thrive on a line with Dylan Strome, his former juniors teammate. He has six goals and six assists in his last six games and points in 11 of his last 12. Patrick Kane scored his 36th goal and added two assists to extend his point streak to 18 games — with 14 goals and 26 assists during the stretch— the longest by a player in the NHL this season. Strome also had a goal and two assists in his fourth three-point game since joining the Blackhawks on Nov. 25, and Brandon Saad, Gustav Forsling and Jonathan Toews also scored to help Chicago move a point behind Minnesota for the second wild card in the Western Conference. Colin White had two goals and an assist, Thomas Chabot scored twice, and Mark Stone, Bobby Ryan and Rudolfs Balcers also had goals for NHL-worst Ottawa, which lost for the eighth time in its last 11.

NCAAMBB – No. 10 MSU expects to be without Ward for weeks
Michigan State forward Nick Ward had surgery on his broken left hand and is expected to be out of for at least a few weeks. Ward said he was injured when his hand made contact with an opponent’s elbow in a 62-44 win over Ohio State on Sunday. Ward is the team’s second-leading scorer at 15.1 points a game and third-leading rebounder at 6.7 per game. The 6-foot-9 junior returned to school after putting his name in the NBA draft last year. Shooting guard Joshua Langford , the team’s third-leading scorer, had season-ending surgery on his left foot this month. The 10th-ranked Spartans (21-5, 12-3 Big Ten) host Rutgers on Wednesday and play at No. 7 Michigan on Sunday, starting the week sharing first place in the Big Ten with the Wolverines. Sophomore Xavier Tillman, who averages 7.3 points and 8.9 rebounds, will likely start in Ward’s place in the post. Freshmen forwards Thomas Kithier and Marcus Bingham, both of whom score a little more than one point per game, will also have chances to play larger roles without Ward in the lineup.
NCAAMBB – Duke reclaims No. 1 in AP Top 25
Tennessee’s loss on Saturday was Duke’s gain as the Blue Devils reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in The Associated Press men’s basketball poll. The Blue Devils received 58 of 64 first-place votes to move to the top of the poll for the third time this season. Tennessee’s four-week reign atop the poll ended with an 86-69 loss at Kentucky. Second-ranked Gonzaga is followed by Virginia, Kentucky and the Volunteers. Nevada, Michigan, North Carolina, Houston and Michigan State rounded out the top 10. LSU made the week’s biggest jump, climbing six spots to No. 13 after last week’s win at Kentucky.
NCAAMBB – Olson suffers stroke
Former Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson has been hospitalized after suffering a minor stroke over the weekend. Banner University Medical Center said in a news release on Monday the 84-year-old Hall of Famer is in good condition but will need some rehabilitation once he is released from the hospital. Doctors said five days after Olson’s retirement in 2008 that the coach had suffered a previously undiagnosed stroke earlier that year.

Arike Ogunbowale scored 22 points and Notre Dame took over with 12 unanswered points in a dominating third quarter to beat N.C. State 95-72 on Monday night. Leading just 41-36 at halftime, Notre Dame (24-3, 11-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) soon got rolling at a fast-paced clip to build a lead that steadily grew into a lopsided margin. When the quarter was over, Notre Dame had scored 34 points — an unsustainable 136-point pace — and made 14 of 21 shots (.667). That included 15 fast-break points, the last coming when Marina Mabrey found Jackie Young for a transition layup to beat the horn and give Notre Dame a 75-59 lead entering the final quarter. Freshman Elissa Cunane scored a season-high 28 points for the Wolfpack (22-3, 9-3), who shot just 39 percent after halftime.
Northern Illinois 77, Western Michigan 64 – Huskies down Broncos 77-64
Northern Illinois had 4 players in double figures as the Huskies beat Western Michigan 77-64. Errin Hodges led Northern Illinois with 17 points, Gabby Nikitinaite had 16, Myia Stakes scored 15, and Ally May had 14 in the win. Deja Wimby led all scorers with 21 points for the Broncos who fall to 8-15, Kamrin Reed added 15 for Western.
NCAAWBB – Rice women ranked for first time in school history
Buoyed by the second-longest winning streak in the country, Rice has entered The Associated Press women’s basketball poll for the first time in school history. The Owls have won 15 straight games and are ranked 25th in Monday’s poll. Baylor remained the top team in the country, garnering 26 of the 28 first-place votes from the national media panel. Oregon moved up to second, getting the other two No. 1 ballots. UConn was third, while Louisville slipped to fourth after losing to Miami on Sunday. The Hurricanes made the biggest jump, moving up six spots to 14th. Notre Dame was fifth. Mississippi State, Stanford, Maryland, North Carolina State and Iowa rounded out the top 10. Drake joined the rankings at No. 24, while Rutgers and Michigan State fell out.
MLB – Cabrera’s return takes next step
Miguel Cabrera hit against a pitcher Monday for the first time since rupturing a tendon in his left biceps on June 12. The 35-year-old hit, fielded, threw and ran the bases during the Detroit Tigers’ first full-squad workout of spring training. Cabrera strained a hamstring last year and then had the arm injury that required season-ending surgery. He was limited to 38 games.
MLB – Bochy to retire after this season
This will be Bruce Bochy 25th season as a major league manager, and it will be his last. The San Francisco Giants skipper has announced that he will retire after this season, saying he informed the ballclub on Monday. He says it’s time for him to step down, adding that “It’s been an unbelievable ride.” Bochy turns 64 on April 16 and is entering his 13th season with the Giants. He led the team to World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014 among his four postseason berths. Bochy also led the Padres to the 1998 World Series and is 74 victories away from 2,000 for his career. He intends to stay in baseball in another role that has yet to be determined.
