Red Wings 3, Senators 2 – Athanasiou, Howard lead Red Wings past Senators, 3-2
Andreas Athanasiou scored twice, including a penalty shot, and Jimmy Howard made 40 saves in his 500th game to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night. Frans Nielsen scored to break a 2-2 tie late in the second period. Brady Tkachuk and Matt Duchene scored for Ottawa, and Anders Nilsson stopped 26 shots. Nielsen got the winner with 3:00 left in the second period. He got his ninth goal, from the bottom of the left circle, by converting a pass from Darren Helm after a turnover by Senators defenseman Dylan DeMelo.

Blackhawks 5, Devils 2 – Kane keeps rolling, leads Blackhawks past Devils 5-2
Patrick Kane scored his 34th goal and added two assists to lead Chicago to a 5-2 win over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night for the Blackhawks’ eighth victory in nine games.  Brandon Saad and Artem Anisimov each had a goal and an assist, and Jonathan Toews and Drake Caggiula also scored for the Blackhawks. Cam Ward stopped 41 shots. Damon Severson and Travis Zajac scored to give the Devils a 2-0 lead with a little more than three minutes left in the first period before the Blackhawks took over. New Jersey has lost two straight and five of its last six. Devils goalie Cory Schneider finished with 31 saves to extend his regular-season winless streak to 24 games. He is now 0-17-4 since his last win Dec. 27, 2017.

Jaylin Walker had 25 points as Kent State beat Western Michigan 82-63 on Thursday. Mitch Peterson had 17 points for Kent State (18-6, 7-4 Mid-American Conference). Philip Whittington added 17 points and 13 rebounds. Anthony Roberts had 14 points for the visitors. Kent State totaled 51 second-half points, a season best for the team. Josh Davis had 17 points for the Broncos (7-18, 1-11). Michael Flowers added 15 points. Seth Dugan had 12 points.

NBA – Warriors’ Kerr fined
Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for verbally abusing and confronting a referee during Wednesday’s 127-107 loss at Portland.  Kerr screamed at referee Ken Mauer, smashed his clipboard, and was given two technical fouls with 3:54 remaining in the fourth quarter, leading to an automatic ejection. He became incensed once a foul called on Warriors forward Draymond Green was upgraded to a flagrant foul 1.

NASCAR – Harvick, Logano win Daytona qualifying races
Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano won the Daytona 500 qualifying races in a pair of Ford sweeps. Harvick won the first of the 150-mile qualifying races that set the field for NASCAR’s showcase event. Logano used a last-lap pass for the lead in the second one. Peter Kligerman has claimed one of the transfer spots into the 40-car field for Sunday’s Cup-opening race.  Kligerman got some late help from fellow Toyota driver Kyle Busch to finish 12th in the first of two qualifying races Thursday night at Daytona International Speedway. The NBC pit reporter will be making his second Daytona 500 start, and first in five years. Brendan Gaughan earned the final slot in the 40-car field.

  • Christian Monconduit scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half to help lead Lake Michigan Catholic to a 54-45 win over Michigan Lutheran.  Monconduit led three Lakers in double figures as the snap a two game slide.  Max Plocher hit four three pointers on his way to scoring 15 points in the loss for the Titans.

  • St. Joseph was 0 for 16 from three point range and fell on the road at Portage Northern 53-30.  Ben Newland had 9 points in the loss for St. Joe.   Devin Marshall had 13 to lead the Huskies.
