The city of St. Joseph is continuing its effort to get all properties spiffed up. Code Enforcement Officer Joan Ross briefed the City Commission Monday night on this year’s inspections, which will be in the area on the south end of the city south of Napier, east of Niles Road all the way to the St. Joseph River.

“There will be around 400 properties to inspect,” says Ross. “That’s following last year’s 1,100 properties.”

Letters will be going out to residential and commercial property owners this week, and the inspections will start right away and go through mid-April. Ross says after extensions, 94% of the properties that were not up to code when inspected last year are now there, and most of the rest are working on it. She adds the violations are the same as they’ve historically been.

“Protective treatments and paint and the second would be accessory structures like garages, sheds, fences that need to be repaired.”

She says the city has six focus areas, and next year will be Area 6, north of the St. Joseph River and including the island. Two areas have already gone through the inspections.
