Andrews University is celebrating Black History Month with a variety of events, looking back at history while also empowering the future. Dr. Ty-Ron Douglas will give the keynote speech this weekend at Andrews University on the Afrofuturism concept – “a coming together of creatives, artists, imaginers and visionaries” to envision and build a better future. Michael Nixon is Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion at Andrews.

“We want to celebrate black culture and empower our black community. And then also while doing that make sure we call those around us who are in positions of influence and power to be accountable, to be respectful, to be empathetic and to draw in with us and join in,” says Nixon.

Black History Month at Andrews University is open to the public and includes the Black Like Me Comedy Slam. And The Agora – a debate style discussion program modeled after the ancient Greek public square.

“The Agora was the place where philosophers and even common folk would come together and have public discussions about the hot topics of the day.”
