(5) Michigan 65, Ohio State 49 – Simpson’s triple-double lifts No. 5 Michigan over Ohio State
Zavier Simpson had 11 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds, and No. 5 Michigan beat Ohio State 65-49 on Tuesday night. Jordan Poole scored 15 points for the Wolverines (20-1, 9-1 Big Ten), who led by six at halftime and kept the Buckeyes frustrated after that. Ohio State (13-7, 3-6) has lost six of seven, and the Buckeyes’ chances of an upset in Ann Arbor were done in by their 19 turnovers.  It wasn’t the easiest night for either team offensively, but Michigan ended up 10 of 27 from 3-point range, and Ohio State (5 of 21) didn’t come close to matching that. Kaleb Wesson led the Buckeyes with 12 points, but much of that was early. The Wolverines led 32-26 at halftime. After Wesson opened the second half with a 3-pointer, Michigan slowly extended the lead, going ahead 44-33 on a 3 by Poole. Simpson later connected from beyond the arc to start a 9-0 run that made it 56-38. Simpson seemed to be everywhere in the second half, including in a brief skirmish between the teams that resulted in technical fouls for two players from each team. The crowd roared with just under 3:00 remaining, when Simpson’s 10th rebound gave him a triple-double.

CMU 86, EMU 82 – Central Michigan holds off Eastern Michigan 86-82
David DiLeo had 20 points, Shawn Roundtree scored seven of his 15 points down the stretch and Kevin McKay pitched in with a double-double as Central Michigan held off Eastern Michigan 86-82 on Tuesday night. DiLeo hit three 3-pointers and all five of his free throws as the Chippewas (15-6, 4-4 Mid-American Conerence) ended a three-game losing streak by beating the Eagles (9-12, 3-5) for the first time since 2015. Roundtree added three from distance, none bigger than his third, which extended CMU’s lead to 80-75 with 2:36 remaining. McKay finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Larry Austin Jr. had 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Robert Montgomery scored 12 as all five starters reach double figures. Paul Jackson topped the Eagles with 21 points, while Kevin McAdoo scored a season-high 20. EMU’s James Thompson IV, who averages a double-double, battled foul trouble and finished with five points and eight boards.

Bucks 115, Pistons 105 – Bucks beat Pistons 115-105 and improve to 13-0 after a loss
Giannis Antetokounmpo had 21 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds to help the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Detroit Pistons 115-105 Tuesday night, keeping the distinction of being the league’s only team without two straight losses. The NBA-leading Bucks improved to 13-0 after losing a game. Milwaukee’s Brook Lopez scored 12 of his 14 points in the first quarter when Antetokounmpo was limited to three points because he sat about half the quarter with two fouls.  Reggie Jackson matched a season high with 25 points, Andre Drummond had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Blake Griffin had 18 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Pistons, who have lost four of five.

Nets 122, Bulls 117 – Russell scores 30, Nets beat Bulls for 9th straight at home

NBA – NBA fines Davis $50K over public trade demand
The NBA has fined New Orleans Pelicans star Anthony Davis $50,000 because of his agent’s comments that Davis won’t sign an extension and wants to be traded. The league office said in a written statement released Tuesday evening that Davis has violated a collectively-bargained rule prohibiting players or their representatives from making public trade demands. The NBA says the fine is for statements that were made by Davis’ agent, Rich Paul, on Monday in an intentional effort to undermine the contractual relationship between Davis and the Pelicans. Davis is under contract with New Orleans through the end of the 2019-20 season. He was drafted by the Pelicans with the first overall pick in 2012 and has been named an All-Star the previous five seasons. He has averaged 29.3 points and 13.3 rebounds per game this season, but has missed the past four games with a sprained left index finger.

NFL – Lions hire Sean Ryan away from Texans to coach quarterbacks
The Detroit Lions have hired Sean Ryan as their quarterbacks coach. Detroit made the move Tuesday, getting Ryan to take the same job he had with the Houston Texans the previous two years. He was on the New York Giants’ coaching staff for nine seasons, including two years as their quarterbacks coach. Ryan began his coaching career in 1997 as the quarterbacks coach for Siena College. The Lions also announced running back coach David Walker has decided to stop coaching. Walker says he is at peace with his decision to put the needs of his family ahead of his coaching career. He was hired by the Lions in 2016 after coaching running backs for the Indianapolis Colts for four seasons.

NFL – Bears hire DeLeone as inside linebackers coach
The Chicago Bears have hired Mark DeLeone as inside linebackers coach. DeLeone spent the past six seasons on Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City and worked with Bears coach Matt Nagy from 2013-17. DeLeone coached inside linebackers this season after serving as the Chiefs’ assistant linebackers coach (2015-17) and defensive quality control coach (2013-14).  DeLeone worked with Pro Bowl linebackers such as Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali and Justin Houston in Kansas City. Houston set a franchise record with 22 sacks in 2014. In Chicago, DeLeone will try to get the most out of promising rookie Roquan Smith. He will also work under new defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano. Led by a dominant defense, Chicago won the NFC North at 12-4 in Nagy’s first season.

NFL – Maroon 5 cancels Super Bowl halftime news conference
Maroon 5 has canceled its news conference to discuss the band’s Super Bowl halftime performance, choosing to not meet with reporters as most acts have done. The NFL announced Tuesday that “the artists will let their show do the talking as they prepare to take the stage this Sunday.” Maroon 5, with frontman Adam Levine, will be joined by Atlanta-based rapper Big Boi and Travis Scott at halftime of the game between the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots. The NFL says instead of a news conference with the performers, it will use media platforms to show behind-the-scenes footage and content. While Maroon 5 did not give a reason for its decision, it comes as some entertainers have said social injustice needs to be addressed during the Super Bowl.

NFL – No reputation remake for Suh in Los Angeles
Ndamukong Suh says he has not gone about trying to remake his reputation in his first and perhaps only season with the Los Angeles Rams. The mammoth defensive tackle and three-time All-Pro was notorious for racking up fines and suspensions that cost him over $400,000 in his first five seasons, all with the Detroit Lions.  “I’m not sure if anything’s changed,” the ninth-year veteran said. “I’m still aggressive. I still like to get after the quarterback. I don’t know. You’d have to ask the refs.” The second overall draft choice in 2010, Suh was fined more than $20,054 for a horse-collar tackle early last month in his return to Detroit. But says he’s been mostly satisfied with laying low after signing a one-year, $14 million deal with the Rams last April. He went so far as to say he doesn’t “mind being in the shadows” _ he plays next to Aaron Donald, the only unanimous choice for the 2018 All-Pro squad _ and called himself an introvert. That’s quite a transformation for a player with so much negative attention early in his career. “I think everybody’s got to have their own opinion and look at it for what it actually is,” Suh said. “I mean obviously there’s mishaps that have taken place early in my career, but some people choose to run with it for years. Some people choose to run with it for days. End of story. It’s up to them.”

NCAAFB – NCAA looks to decrease chances of marathon OT football games
The NCAA football rules committee later this month will consider changing the overtime format. The goal is to make it less likely for games to go beyond two extra possessions for each team. Among the more radical ideas set to be discussed is going to a 2-point-conversion shootout after teams have played two full OT possessions. The current format, implemented in 1996, gives each team possession at the opponent’s 25-yard line, and repeats the process until one team has outscored the other. After two possessions by each team, the offense must try a 2-point conversion instead of kicking an extra point after a touchdown. The rules committee will also consider eliminating point-after-touchdown kicks in overtime, forcing teams to go for 2 from the very first possession.

Tennis – 3-time major champion Andy Murray says he had hip operation
Andy Murray says he had hip resurfacing surgery and had a metal joint implanted. The three-time major champion posted a message Tuesday on Instagram saying he had the operation Monday in London. Murray says he is “feeling a bit battered and bruised.” The post includes two pictures _ one shows Murray in a hospital bed, the other shows an X-ray. He has dealt with hip pain for years and already had an operation in January 2018. After losing in the first round of the Australian Open two weeks ago, Murray said he would decide quickly whether to have surgery again. He said at a news conference before the Australian Open that it might wind up being the last tournament of his career.
