Recruitment will be starting soon in Van Buren County for high school students looking to compete in Envirothon, a natural resources and environmental competition. Kyle Mead is with the Van Buren Conservation District and has been working with the program since he was a high school student over 15 years ago in Lawrence and says right now, they’re still working on the details for the meetings.

“I think it’s a great fit for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H,” says Mead. “It doesn’t have to be a high school team. It could be a Boy Scout team or a 4-H group that starts a team. Just looking for kids in general with a passion for natural resources.”

He got his start with his career by taking part in Envirothon 15 years ago while a student at Lawrence High School, and admits he hadn’t even considered this line of work before then. Mead says the students take a test in different locations out in the field.

“It might be a forest area, a wetlands area, a farm, and they answer questions about what goes on with those specific areas where they’re being tested.”

Mead says they will soon be having meeting for interested students, with the regional competition set for March 14 at Fort Custer in Augusta and the state competition slated for May 15. More information is available on the Michigan Envirothon website at MACD.org.
