State lawmakers have sent Governor Rick Snyder a bill that delays a requirement that farm animals confined in small spaces be given more room. The rules apply to egg-laying hens and pregnant pigs. Attorneys for Animals President Beatrice Friedlander told Michigan News Network what the changes will mean.
“The hens will have enough room to spread their wings and turn around, and so it’s not so much an increase of X inches, but it’s a descriptor that they can at least move around, spread their wings, and have some sort of normal activity,” Friedlander said. “It’
The bill will push back standards scheduled to take effect in October of 2019 to April of 2020 for hens. The rules are being pushed back to October of 2025 for pigs.
