With marijuana now legal to possess in Michigan, Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey wants everyone to know the rules. He tells WSJM News you should treat marijuana in a similar way to alcohol, at least when driving.
“Just like alcohol,” Bailey said. “We ask people to drink responsibly. If you’re going to smoke marijuana, be responsible. Don’t get behind the wheel and cause an accident or impair your driving.”
However, Bailey says there are more restrictions on marijuana than booze.
“You only can smoke it in private places,” Bailey said. “Homes, your home, a friend’s home. You can’t smoke it in public. You can’t smoke it in your car in a public parking lot. That’s the public, if somebody sees you smoking it.”
Bailey says no pot smoking in your yard or driveway because someone could see you. It’s legal to walk around with as much as 2.5 ounces, and you can have up to 10 ounces in your home, but it must be locked up. It will be a civil infraction to violate any of the rules. Maximum penalty is a $1,000 fine. Three offenses and you can be arrested for a misdemeanor.
