A lot more people in the state are registered to be organ donors through the Michigan Secretary of State’s office. Senator John Proos applauded the announcement by Ruth Johnson’s office this week.

“That registry has gone from about one-third to a full two-thirds of the (adult) residents of Michigan,” notes Proos. The St. Joseph Republican had a role in the increase as well.

“In 2016, I passed Lauren’s Law,” explains Proos. “It was an idea that came to me directly from a constituent from Niles who received an organ that saved his life. That law requires the Secretary of State affirmatively ask when re=upping your driver’s license or when you get your license for the first time if you’d like to be an organ donor registrant.”

Secretary of State Johnson says each donor has the ability to save up to eight lives through organ donation and improve as many as 75 more through cornea and tissue donation. There are roughly 3,100 people in Michigan awaiting an organ transplant.
