Last Night

Indianapolis Colts 29, Jacksonville Jaguars 26

Bears 34, Lions 22 – Trubisky throws 3 TDs, Bears beat Lions 34-22
Mitchell Trubisky threw for 355 yards and three touchdowns, and the NFC North-leading Chicago Bears beat the Detroit Lions 34-22 to snap a 10-game losing streak against division opponents on Sunday.  The Bears (6-3) had dropped nine of 10 against Detroit (3-6) and were seeking their first victory over a division opponent since Oct. 31, 2016, against Minnesota. Chicago jumped out to a 26-7 halftime lead with Trubisky and Allen Robinson leading the way. And the Bears surpassed their win total from last year with their third straight victory.  Trubisky completed 23 of 30 passes against a short-handed secondary, with standout cornerback Darius Slay sidelined by a knee injury.  Allen Robinson caught six passes for 133 yards and two TDs after missing two games with a groin injury.  Rookie Anthony Miller added a career high 122 yards on five receptions, including a 45-yard TD and a 55-yard catch. Khalil Mack had two of Chicago’s six sacks against Matthew Stafford _ both in the second half after missing back-to-back games with an injured right ankle. Detroit dropped its third in a row after back-to-back victories. Stafford was consistently under pressure again after getting sacked 10 times against Minnesota the previous week. He was 25 of 42 for 274 yards, two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

Colts 29, Jaguars 26 – Luck, Ebron lead Colts past struggling Jaguars 29-26
Andrew Luck threw three touchdown passes in the first half and the Indianapolis Colts’ defense forced a late turnover Sunday to preserve a 29-26 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Indy (4-5) has won three straight. Tight end Eric Ebron had a career-high three touchdowns, including one on a 2-yard run, all in the first half.  Ebron, Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox teamed up to catch eight passes for 133 yards and all three scores. Luck wound up 21 of 29 with 285 yards and one interception but avoided being sacked for the fourth consecutive game _ the longest stretch of his pro career. Blake Bortles threw for 319 yards and two TDs but the Jaguars (3-6) came up short when Kenny Moore III stripped the ball from Rashad Greene Sr. and Malik Hooker recovered for the Colts with 1:24 to go. Initially, Greene was ruled down by contact, but it was overturned on a replay review from the booth.

The Pacers got within 8 on a basket by Cory Joseph with about 90 seconds left, but Paul made a layup a few seconds later to put the game out of reach. Kyle Busch has won for the eighth time this season and set up a head-to-head showdown with Kevin Harvick for NASCAR’s championship.  Busch’s win Sunday at ISM Raceway outside of Phoenix tied him with Harvick for most this year in the Cup Series. The two were the most dominant drivers this season and will race next week at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the title against reigning series champion Martin Truex Jr. and Joey Logano.   Harvick finished fifth to close a week in which his team was penalized for cheating.  He started from the pole but had a harder day than expected because of a flat tire early in the race.

MHSAA – More winter sports teams begin practice
The Winter sports season started last week with the start of practice for boys basketball and competitive cheerleading. Today practice officially gets underway for girls basketball, bowling and wrestling.  Girls basketball starts a week later than in previous years because the MHSAA switched the start dates of boys and girls basketball because the Breslin Center at Michigan State University was unavailable for the previously scheduled date for the boys state semifinals and finals.  The girls semifinals and finals will be held the following week at Calvin College in Grand Rapids for a second straight season.
