Celtics 108, Pistons 105 – Irving scores 31, Celtics beat Pistons again 108-105
Kyrie Irving scored a season-high 31 points, Marcus Morris had 15 points and nine rebounds and the Boston Celtics beat Detroit 108-105 on Tuesday night, handing the Pistons back-to-back losses after a 4-0 start. Jayson Tatum scored 16, Jaylen Brown had 14 points and Al Horford scored 11 for Boston.  Blake Griffin had 24 points and 15 rebounds for Detroit, which couldn’t recover after scoring just 13 points in the third quarter. The Pistons chopped Boston’s 14-point lead down to a point with 4:21 left to play, and then again with 12 seconds remaining, but couldn’t quite complete the comeback. Boston, which beat Detroit on the road 109-89 on Saturday, is still the only team to beat the Pistons this season. Andre Drummond had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Reggie Bullock scored 16 for Detroit. Ish Smith added 13 points off the bench and gave Detroit one more chance on a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left to play, pulling Detroit within 103-102. But the Celtics sealed it from the foul line.

Red Wings 5, Blue Jackets 3 – Bertuzzi’s late goal powers Red Wings over Blue Jackets 5-3
Tyler Bertuzzi scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period and Jimmy Howard had 34 saves as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3 on Tuesday night. Bertuzzi poked in a rebound off Sergei Bobrovsky’s stick with 3:24 left in the game after the Blue Jackets had scored three goals in the period to tie the score. Dylan Larkin got an empty-net goal _ his second tally of the night _ with 43 seconds left to cap the scoring and give Detroit its second straight win after losing nine of first 11. Nineteen-year-old Michael Rasmussen got his first NHL goal and Anthony Mantha also scored for the Red Wings, who snapped the Blue Jackets’ two-game winning streak.

NFL – Lions trade Golden Tate to Eagles for 3rd-round pick
The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired wide receiver Golden Tate from the Detroit Lions for a third-round draft pick next year. Tate has 44 catches for 517 yards and three touchdowns this season. He joins Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor and Jordan Matthews, giving Carson Wentz another target. Tate wrote on Twitter: “It’s been real DETROIT! I’ll love ya forever. Philly Philly let’s get it!!” The 30-year-old Tate averaged 93 catches, 1,056 yards receiving and five TDs the past four seasons in Detroit. He went to the Pro Bowl after the 2014 season. Tate spent his first four seasons with Seattle.  The defending champion Eagles are 4-4 and have a bye this week.

Other Notable NFL Trades

  • The Packers have traded running back and kick returner Ty Montgomery to the Ravens for a seventh-round selection in next year’s draft. Green Bay also traded starting safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to the Redskins for a 2019 fourth-round draft pick.
  • Houston has acquired five-time Pro Bowl WR Demariyus Thomas from the Denver Broncos for a fourth-round pick in the 2019 draft and a swap of seventh-round selections. General manager John Elway says the rise of Courtland Sutton, DaeSean Hamilton and Tim Patrick made it easier to make the deal.  Houston is at Denver this week.

NCAAFB – First playoff rankings are out
Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Notre Dame are the top four teams in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, matching the order in the current Associated Press football poll. That’s a good sign for those programs, since the top four selections in the last four initial rankings made it to the playoff. Georgia, Alabama and Clemson started in the top four and finished their last year. Michigan is fifth, followed by Georgia and Oklahoma.

NCAAFB – Ohio State coach Meyer dealing with ‘aggressive’ headaches
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer re-iterated lingering health issues have been causing him occasional severe headaches this season, but says he intends to remain with the Buckeyes “as long as I can.”  Meyer spoke with a small group of reporters Tuesday to try to clear up questions about his future at Ohio State and why he has seemingly looked uncomfortable on the sideline this season. Meyer addressed the issue and speculation about his future Monday, too. The headaches are related to an arachnoid cyst in his brain that he has been dealing with for years. Dr. Andrew Thomas, Meyer’s personal physician, released a statement, saying he has been working with Meyer to monitor and manage symptoms.  Thomas said: “This includes aggressive headaches, which have particularly flared up the past two years.”

NCAAFB – School inquiry sides with Durkin
Maryland football coach DJ Durkin is being allowed to go back to the sideline. The University System of Maryland board of regents has recommended that Durkin retain his job. That opens the door for him to return to the team as soon as this Saturday against Michigan State. Board chairman Jim Brady said the consensus was that Durkin was unfairly blamed for the dysfunction in the athletic department. Durkin has been on paid administrative leave since Aug. 11, following the death of a player who collapsed during practice and an investigation of bullying by the Maryland coaching staff. The Terrapins are 5-3 under offensive coordinator and interim coach Matt Canada, tying their best eight-game start since 2014.

MLB – Cubs decline $10M option on Kintzler, who has $5M option
The Cubs have declined a $10 million team option on right-hander Brandon Kintzler, who now must decide this week whether to exercise a $5 million player option. A 34-year-old right-hander, Kintzler was 3-3 with a 4.60 ERA for Washington and the Cubs, who acquired him July 31 for minor league right-hander Jhon Romero. He had a $5 million base salary. He was a first-time All-Star in 2017 and has 48 career saves. He’s also pitched for Milwaukee (2010-15) and Minnesota (2016-17).
