The Van Buren County Road Commission continues to push its road millage proposal as the November 6 elections get close. Road Commission Finance Director Linnea Rader tells WSJM News after the same proposal was shot down by voters in August, the commission decided to ask again.

“What we found after the results came back from the last proposal, we heard a lot of information from residents that they didn’t understand what the funds would actually be used for, or what was the intent of the millage,” Rader said.

So, what is the Van Buren County Road Commission seeking?

“We’re seeking a three-mill ballot proposal over 12 years,” Rader said. “The resulting ballot proposal would go to fund road work around the county. The money that the Van Buren County Road Commission receives would go strictly to the primary road system.”

Rader tells us the 12-year proposal would make it possible to get Van Buren County’s primary roads to an average of good condition. Right now, 67% of them are in poor condition. The Van Buren County Road Commission will hold an informational session on the ballot proposal next Wednesday at Lake Michigan College in South Haven. It will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Rader says as part of the meeting, they’ll explain how road funding works, and why Van Buren County no longer gets enough.
