Congressman Fred Upton is hailing last week’s passage of legislation designed to help in the fight against opioid addiction. He tells WSJM News the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act goes back about a year, and is a combination of a couple of different Senate and House opioid bills.

“It’s pretty comprehensive,” Upton said. “It’s going to be more funding, not only for research. One of the issues that I helped to lead on is to see if we could find some alternatives to opioids that are not addictive. More education, more treatment centers, a whole variety of things.”

In particular, Upton says the effort to develop non-opioid painkillers will get some new funding. It also includes money for law enforcement, to prevent addiction, and to help treat addiction. Upton says the president could sign the package this week.
