Too many Michigan schools districts without enough teachers, according to the head of a administrators group. Wendy Zdeb of the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals told Michigan News Network recruiting new teachers is tough, but keeping them is tougher, and many leave teaching after five years.

“We have to have a positive climate and culture to be able to give teachers the ability to give input for the direction of the school, and also try to find ways that teachers can enter into leadership positions within the district without having to leave the classroom,” Zdeb said.

Zdeb says better state funding would help raise starting pay and benefits to make the profession more attractive. She also says colleges need to provide better guidance counseling for prospective teachers.
