If you’ve recently received a mysterious check in the mail, don’t get too excited and cash it. It’s most likely a scam according to the Better Business Bureau of Western Michigan. The BBB’s John Masterson told WKZO News fake check scams of all sorts are on the rise.

“They say, ‘You won $10 million, and here’s a check for the first $5,000. Just deposit it in a bank, send us $2,000, and we’ll wire you back the rest of the money.’”

The bureau is urging people to research the company that has sent them mystery money, use Google to check if the routing number matches the bank it’s supposedly drawn from, and be especially wary of anything that seems too good to be true.
