It’s been a busy time at Benton Harbor Area Schools. At a Tuesday meeting, CEO Robert Herrera told the board of education about some of the things being done as the new school year gets underway. Among them are a couple of online learning programs to help students with credit recovery. Herrera told WSJM News this is the first year Benton Harbor Area Schools has applied for a state Seat Time Waiver to have online learning.

“With the Seat Time Waiver, it will allow us to give students more opportunities to explore online delivery systems,” Herrera said. “Some of our students are taking advantage of that. As you know, it’s a very popular trend for student to become cyber school students or online students, and so we just wanted to offer the same service.”

Herrera says this will get the district in line with most others. Also Tuesday, the board learned there have been offers on some of the properties the district has for sale. They include some parcels on M-63 that need deed restrictions resolved, and a property on North Hull. The offer on the Hull property is too low. Herrera told us staffing remains a challenge, although the district has made 26 new hires, many teachers. Herrera said a goal is to provide better support to long-term substitutes through a program with Western Michigan University.
