Apple harvest is underway around the area for early varieties of the fruit, and the crop overall looks excellent according to Ionia County farmer Elizabeth Wittenbach.

“The crop looks very nice,” said Wittenbach. “We had a really good season. There wasn’t really a big late frost or anything like that, so the fruit is really clean. We’ve got good flavor from the warm summer, and now we’re getting good color as we get later into the season.”

The estimate for this year’s crop in Michigan is 28 million bushels, a big increase over last year’s 20 million bushel harvest.
