White Sox 6, Yankees 2 – Rodon, White Sox keep rolling with 6-2 win over Yanks
Carlos Rodon pitched two-hit ball over seven innings, Yoan Moncada doubled in two and surging Chicago beat the New York Yankees 6-2 on Monday night for its fourth straight win. Rodon (6-3) allowed a two-run shot to Gleyber Torres but was strong otherwise, and Chicago’s bullpen closed out a three-hitter. The White Sox have won 10 of 13 and clinched their first winning month of the season by improving to 15-10 in August.  Rodon is 5-0 with a 1.84 ERA in his past nine starts. The 25-year-old left-hander hasn’t lost since June 30.  New York (83-48) missed an opportunity to gain ground on the idle Red Sox, falling 6 ½ games back of the AL East leaders. Coming off a four-game sweep in Baltimore, the Yankees had won eight of nine and shaved 4 1/2 games off Boston’s lead in a span of eight days prior to Monday.

Cubs 7, Mets 4 – Lester helps Cubs beat Mets 7-4 for 6th straight win
Jon Lester got it done with his arm, glove and bat.  Lester worked six innings, drove in two runs with a timely single off Noah Syndergaard and made two nice plays in the field, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 7-4 on Monday night for their sixth consecutive victory. Anthony  Rizzo homered and Daniel Murphy reached three more times from the leadoff spot as Chicago moved a season-high 24 games over .500 with its eighth straight win against New York dating to last season. Murphy, who began his career with the Mets, is batting .407 (11 for 27) in six games since he was acquired in a trade with Washington.  The Cubs (77-53) piled up 14 hits while increasing their NL Central lead to 4 1/2 games over idle St. Louis.

NCAAFB – No. 14 Michigan faces 0-16 skid against ranked teams on road
Jim Harbaugh was coaching the San Diego Toreros the last time Michigan won a true road game against a ranked team.  Yeah, that was a long time ago. The 14th-ranked Wolverines have an opportunity to stop their 12-year skid on Saturday night at No. 12 Notre Dame. Harbaugh and his players haven’t had a lot to do with Michigan’s 0-16 road mark against Top 25 teams since beating the second-ranked Fighting Irish 47-21 on Sept. 16, 2006. The streak started under former coach Lloyd Carr and rolled on with Rich Rodriguez, Brady Hoke and Harbaugh on the sideline for college football’s winningest program. Michigan hasn’t been able to win many big games, especially away from the Big House, over the last three years under Harbaugh.  Michigan was 0-2 on the road against ranked teams last year, losing by 29 points at Penn State and by two touchdowns at Wisconsin. The Wolverines were close to stopping the streak in 2016, only to lose by three points in double overtime at Ohio State. In Harbaugh’s first season at Michigan, he didn’t face a ranked team on its field. This week’s opener will not be the Wolverines’ only chance to win a road game against a ranked team, with matchups coming up at No. 11 Michigan State and No. 5 Ohio State. Northwestern, which received 13 votes in The Associated Press preseason college football poll, also may be ranked by the time it hosts Michigan in a month.

Tennis – US Open – Most top seeds advance… most
Top-ranked Rafael Nadal advanced to the second round of the U.S. Open when David Ferrer retired in the second set of their all-Spanish matchup. Simona Halep has become the first No. 1-seeded woman to lose in first round of the U.S. Open in the professional era. Halep was beaten 6-2, 6-4 by 44th-ranked Kaia Kanepi of Estonia. Venus and Serena Williams advanced as did defending women’s champ Sloane Stephens.  Kevin Anderson, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka advanced in the men’s draw.

NFL – Lions sign free agent defensive end Robert Ayers
When healthy, Robert Ayers has been a pretty productive pass rusher.  The Detroit Lions could use some help in that area, and now the veteran defensive end has a chance to provide it.  The Lions signed Ayers in their latest attempt to bolster their defensive front. Now entering his 10th NFL season, Ayers made 10 starts in each of the past two seasons with Tampa Bay. He has 35 sacks, including a career-high 9½ with the New York Giants in 2015.  The Lions also announced Monday that they had waived cornerback Josh Okonye. They did not announce these moves until shortly after coach Matt Patricia had finished his news conference, so he was not available to comment on Ayers’ addition. Ayers would not speak with reporters after practice.  Ayers was a first-round draft pick in 2009 by the Denver Broncos. He spent five seasons with them and then two with the Giants. Ayers has only played in 12 games in each of the past four seasons. He dealt with concussion and shoulder problems toward the end of last season, and he has also had ankle and pectoral muscle issues in the past few years. He turns 33 on Sept. 6.

NFL – Beckham Jr agrees to 5-year deal with Giants
Odell Beckham Jr. is now the NFL’s highest-paid wide receiver. A person familiar with the negotiations has told The Associated Press the New York Giants have agreed to a five-year contract extension with the three-time Pro Bowler.  The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Giants have not announced the deal, which comes less than two weeks before the season opener against Jacksonville.  While terms were not disclosed, the deal with the 25-year-old, 2014 first-rounder is worth about $95 million with $65 million guaranteed. Beckham’s $19 million average salary would top the $17 million earned by Antonio Brown of the Pittsburgh Steelers. His $95 million deal also tops the $82.5 million deal receiver Mike Evans has with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Beckham, who missed most of last season with a broken left ankle, was scheduled to make $8.4 million in the final year of his rookie contract. In his first four seasons, Beckham has caught 313 passes for 4,424 yards and 38 touchdowns.

NFL – Luck misses practice
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck missed Monday’s practice with an injured foot. Coach Frank Reich says Luck was hurt during Saturday’s victory over San Francisco and indicated it was a minor injury. He says Luck would play if the Colts had a regular-season game Sunday. Luck had already been ruled out for Thursday night’s preseason finale at Cincinnati. He has missed 26 of Indy’s past 45 regular-season games with an assortment of injuries, including a partially torn labrum that required surgery in January 2017. That injury kept Luck off the field all of last season.

NBA – Manu Ginobili, a 4-time champion with Spurs, retires at 41
Manu Ginobili has played his final game, and with that a new era awaits the San Antonio Spurs. Ginobili announced his decision to retire Monday, the 41-year-old wrapping up what he called a "fabulous journey" in which he helped the Spurs win four NBA championships in 16 seasons with the club. The smooth left-handed guard from Argentina came to San Antonio in 2002, forming what quickly became a powerful "Big 3" alongside Tim Duncan and Tony Parker.
