Democratic candidate for Congress in Michigan’s Sixth District Matt Longjohn stopped by Benton Harbor City Hall on Monday to speak with the Benton Harbor City Commission. Longjohn, a doctor, promoted his healthcare credentials to commissioners, saying his experience as a public health official puts him in a good position to better serve citizens.

“What I’ve been working on is making sure that people have healthy lives,” Longjohn said. “I’ve been named by the Obama White House as one of the top 100 innovators in healthcare in America, creating community health worker jobs that ended up preventing diabetes and saving Medicare lots of money. That led to a Medicare expansion in April of this year to cover diabetes prevention.”

Longjohn said local governments are in an important position to help promote the health of citizens in areas that include transportation and child care. He told commissioners he looks forward to working with them in any way they would like.
