Anyone interested in learning more about police work will soon have a chance to take part in a Michigan State Police Citizens Academy. Trooper Alan Fitzpatrick of the Paw Paw post tells WSJM News the next academy will start September 24, and they’re taking registrations now. He says each Monday session looks at different aspects of the work state police do.

“There’s a week where we talk about home safety and breaking and entering, how to prevent that type of thing and how to respond to it,” Fitzpatrick said. “We talk about traffic enforcement, distracted driving, and things of that nature.”

Fitzpatrick tells us anyone can attend as long as they’re 18 or older and have no felonies.

“I think most of the people are just interested from the standing point as citizens about how we operate,” Fitzpatrick said.

Each Michigan State Police post holds a citizens academy once a year. To sign up for next one in Van Buren County, call the Paw Paw post.
