MLB – 70 years after Babe Ruth’s death, fans still flock to grave
At a cemetery in suburban New York, one grave is flanked with baseballs and bats instead of bouquets. The items are tributes that still pile up at Babe Ruth’s grave seven decades after his death. The indelible slugger and larger-than-life personality died Aug. 16, 1948. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox legend is considered by many to be the greatest player in baseball history. He played for 22 major-league seasons before retiring in 1935, after setting home run records that stood for decades. Gate of Heaven Cemetery field superintendent John Garry says visitors to Ruth’s gravesite have left countless bats, balls and caps, as well as beer, cigars, hot dogs and once an entire pizza to honor a man known for his appetites.

NCAAFB – Maryland interim coach helps players fight heat
Maryland interim football coach Matt Canada has taken steps to ensure that the Terrapins are poised to deal with the heat of summer during his practices following the death of offensive lineman Jordan McNair.  In the first workout since Maryland publicly accepted responsibility for mistakes that contributed to McNair’s death, two tents were in place at the practice field Wednesday to provide shade. Underneath the awnings were several fans, along with liquids and ice. Practice sessions have been shortened to less than two hours, with time for breaks.

CFL – Johnny Manziel placed under concussion protocol by Alouettes
Johnny Manziel was placed under the Canadian Football League’s concussion protocol Wednesday. The Montreal Alouettes quarterback was hit at the goal line last weekend in a 24-17 loss at Ottawa. “On Tuesday morning, Johnny Manziel mentioned to our medical staff that he felt symptoms that could be associated with the prescribed medication he uses for a previously diagnosed medical condition,” the Alouettes said in a statement. “He then missed practice in order to have some blood work done. “In view of the hit he received on Saturday and the potential mitigating side effects of his prescribed medication, the Alouettes medical staff has placed Manziel under the CFL concussion protocol for further observation and precautionary reasons. Manziel will be closely observed and assessed in the next few days.”  The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner struggled in his CFL debut against Hamilton, throwing four first-half interceptions, then was much better against the Redblacks. He did fumble after taking the big hit, but Montreal recovered for a touchdown. The Alouettes are at Edmonton on Saturday night.  Montreal is 1-7 this season and has won just once in 19 games going back a year.
